George Kenney, the principal (headmaster) of North Port High School in Florida, was warned by school district officals not to hypnotize students except as a demonstration in psychology classes. In spite of the warnings, he hypnotized over 70 students and staff at the school -- with parental permission, but outside of class. The sessions helped students, their test scores improved, their performance in sports improved -- but then in March and April of 2011, two of them killed themselves: Wesley McKinley (16) and Brittany Palumbo (17), and another one, Marcus Freeman (16), died in a car accident. There is no evidence that Kenney's hypnosis was connected to the students' deaths in any way, but he was still charged with two misdemeanors, including practicing hypnosis without a license, served a year of probation, lost his teaching license and his job. The families filed a wrongful-death civil suit in 2012 against the school board, saying that the officials hadn't done enough to stop Kenney from hypnotizing students. Now, in 2015, the courts have settled everything, and each family will be paid $200,000 by the school board. Please make sure that you're not the one losing your job or paying hundreds of thousands of dollars because you're practicing hypnosis illegally. In general, I believe that hypnosis for entertainment is ok, but you need to be careful with hypnosis for therapy. But please don't take my word for it. Check your local laws. *sigh* No connections and they still accuse the guy? This stuff happens all time with drunken stupidity and general idiocy, but nope, blame the hypnotist! We get such a bad rep... xD
